I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. II Timothy 4:7

On November 11, 2009 the angel of death came and bore the loving spirit of Mr. Derrick La Monica Dickerson away to a land that is free from sickness, sorrow, pain and death. He was the fourth child of seven born to Joel Sr. And Barbara Ann Cox Dickerson.

Derrick attended elementary school at Avon Avenue and Camden Middle Street Schools in the City of Newark. Derrick was the boy in the neighborhood known for running errands for the seniors. Their were many seniors that Derrick would help in any way he could. Derrick later attended high school at East Side High in the city of Newark where he played football against younger brother, Abraham who played for Shabazz High at the time.

Derrick was a handy man of sorts, fixing things without being taught how to do it. If you had a tough job, especially heavy and messy, Derrick delighted in helping you.

Derrick did what others wouldnt do to help. Derrick worked various security jobs over the years and in the year of 2000 accepted Christ as his personal Saviour. Derrick had Muslim friends, Christian, Catholic and Hindo. Derricks character drew a crowd. If Derrick befriended you, you had a friend.

In 2005 Derrick fell ill and the next four years of his life became a battle but Derrick knew the battle was not his but the Lords. After a few years of being away from regular church attendance Derrick rededicated his life to Christ standing before the church giving powerful testimony on April 2009.

Derrick was a giver, known to ask for money just to give or feed the homeless. If Derrick had one dollar you had two. Derrick loved his family and was very protective of his sisters, Barbara Ronica, Kim and Mother Barbara who cared for him during the last years of his life. In April of 2009 although very ill and wheelchair bound Derrick attended church as often as he could. Derrick wanted to please God. Derricks last prayer was for God to save his entire family. Derrick will be deeply missed.

Derrick leaves to cherish his loving memory: parents, Joel Sr. and Barbara Ann Cox Dickerson of Orange, NJ, Joel Jr. and Dinah Dickerson of Bollingbrook, IL, Kelvin N. of Harlem, NY, Issac L. and Junko Dickerson of Union, NJ, Barbara R. of Orange, NJ, Kim of Orange, NJ and Abraham of Montclair, NJ.
