Arthur Edward Lovett

On Monday January 25, 2010, after a twelve year struggle with Alzheimer's disease Arthur Edward Lovett passed away peacefully while residing at the VA Nursing Home in Lyons, NJ.

Arthur, a native New Yorker was born to the Late Mary Dallam Lovett and the late Charles Arthur Lovett in Harlem on October 8, 1931. The Lovett family stayed in New York until 1941 when better job prospects opened up in New Jersey. The family moved to Jersey City NJ and lived in Booker T. Washington garden apartments.

Arthur, the oldest of the three children, attended P.S. #9 elementary school and Lincoln High School in Jersey City. While attending Lincoln, Arthur excelled in track and field with a city champion title in the high hurdles. Soon after Arthur's high school days he was drafted into the United States Army. As a soldier, Arthur served honorably through both the Korean and Vietnam wars.

During his tours of duty, Arthur climbed through the enlisted ranks and received several commendations and medals for meritorious service including the BRONZE STAR. His specialty was military intelligence and he eventually reached the rank of Chief Warrant Officer.

While on leave, Arthur would return stateside where he met and married Ernestine Lampkin Lovett of Jersey City in 1964. The couple soon started a family with the birth of Todd in 1965 and Ellen 2 years later. In 1972 Arthur decided to retire from his military service and return back to Jersey City, NJ to live and raise his family.

Using his military benefits Arthur was able complete a bachelors program and earn a Masters Degree in Social Work from Rutgers University by 1977. His first job opportunity after graduate school was an assistant director position of a county homemaker agency in Montclair NJ called Chr-ILL. Within 3 years Arthur was promoted to Executive Director and held that position for the next 5 years. He left that position in 1985 to work for the NJ State Department of Human Services as a contract administrator. Arthur continued to work for State of NJ in various positions until he retired in 1998.

For those who knew Arthur he was a gentle giant. Art always had a positive word to say and a willingness to help others. Art had a love for photography. He owned several cameras and kept volumes of pictures. Arthur always had camera in hand at all family functions and the slide projector ready for a slide show at anytime.

Arthur was predeceased in 1990 by his wife of 25 years Ernestine Lampkin Lovett of Jersey City, NJ.

He leaves behind to carry the family torch: to his son, Todd Lovett and daughter Ellen Reaves; grandchildren, Charles and Jordan Lovett; a devoted sister, Henrietta Marshall and loving brother, Carlton Lovett; two great aunts Catherine Lyles and Viola Williams, son-in-law Kenneth Reaves, daughter-in-law Bridgette Lovett, brother-In law Artis Lampkin, sisters-In law Gladys Lovett and Shirley Lampkin, three nephews Christopher Lampkin, Kyle Lampkin and Carlton Lovett ll, two nieces Mia Lampkin and Althea Ortiz, a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins and a special friend, Ella Tilghman.
